Naloxone Mailing Program
Naloxone is a lifesaving drug that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. Naloxone does not require a prescription and is extremely easy to use. The North Colorado Health Alliance and the Naloxone Champions of Larimer and Weld counties believe every household should have access to Naloxone. It may save the life of a family member, friend, or stranger. Opioids are not going away. In fact, persons may be unknowingly exposed to opioids (fentanyl and carfentanyl) laced in street drugs and marijuana. In 2019 alone, 612 lives were lost to opioid overdose (CIT). To date in 2020, there has been a 282% increase in the number of overdose deaths in Colorado alone (CIT). These losses are deeply tragic and yet completely preventable. Naloxone, in the right place, at the right time, is another life not added to this statistic.

What is CO-SLAW?
- The Colorado Opioid Synergy for Larimer and Weld counties is a network of MAT clinics that offer medication assisted treatment and counseling services. Within this network is a highly trained team of care coordinators to assist you with accessing services, reducing barriers (transportation, housing, and other assistance) and partnering with you in your recovery.
- CO-SLAW can also provide Narcan education and kits at no charge.
- All participants in the CO-SLAW program receive confidential care.
- CO-SLAW also offers support for family members and loved ones. The team utilizes CRAFT to support those who you care about most.
- June 2020 update: After listening to the needs of the Northern Colorado Community – CO-SLAW has expanded their services to cover all types of Substance Use Disorder. We continue to provide comprehensive care coordination, access to treatment services, community and provider education and Naloxone distribution.

Area and Population Served
We provide services for over 200 clients (and growing) in the Northern Colorado (Larimer and Weld counties) area with opioid use disorder. Our services span the scope from emotional recovery support to assisting with barriers to treatment such as transportation and housing, assisting with DHS applications and helping clients with resume and employment applications.
What is MAT?
- Medication Assisted Treatment is a FDA-approved medication to treat opioid addiction (a dependence on prescription pain killers such as – Vicodin, Oxycontin, Percocet and other drugs such as Heroin and Fentanyl). MAT helps to stop the withdrawal symptoms and cravings and makes it easier for you to get your life back.
- MAT is covered by Medicaid and partially by Medicare and most insurances. Grants are available to assist with cost for participants.

Program Updates
March 2021
The CO-SLAW network has now assisted over 500 persons in Larimer and Weld counties struggling with SUD access treatment and recovery services.
Our goal is to provide immediate treatment and recovery access and deliver comprehensive care coordination to reduce any barriers to ongoing recovery.
Our data shows members have remained in recovery for greater that 6 months and have a significant decrease in illegal drug use and an increase in employment, housing, social support and an overall perception of getting their lives back.
We also welcomed our first dedicated peer to the CO-SLAW team. Hans joins us as a person with lived experience who will be an incredible voice at the table and connection point for persons in the community struggling with SUD. The benefits of peer recovery support for individuals with SUD show improved relationships with providers and social supports, reduced rates of relapse, increased satisfaction with overall treatment, and increased treatment retention.

June 2020

As our COVID landscape has changed we have seen an increase in transportation being a barrier to accessing treatment …
A CO-SLAW care coordinator was working with a client with cognitive delays in addition to substance use disorder. She previously had access to personal transportation but was needing an alternative. Utilizing the bus system was foreign to her and created a great deal of anxiety. She felt this may halt her recovery. In working with the client, the care coordinator met her and together the rode the bus several times to and from her treatment clinic. They then practiced walking to and from her home to the bus stop and rode the route again. He drew her a color coded easy to use map with the bus route and her stop information. Today she feels at ease riding the bus and continues down the road of her successful recovery.

Recently released CO-SLAW program data
Even with the COVID regulations we are continuing to outreach clients, assist with access to MAT and meet with them directly utilizing COVID precautions.
Additionally, we have been providing outreach at the Cold Weather Shelter at Island Grove and at Northern Aztlan Community Center in Fort Collins. This includes Naloxone distribution and CO-SLAW care coordination.
We have also teamed with the Larimer County Health Department to assist with their Naloxone efforts.
January 6, 2020:
CO-SLAW has grown to a team of six care coordinators specialized in assisting those in our community with opioid use disorder access MAT. We work as a hub between the 8 CO-SLAW clinics with over 13 sites to ensure individualized recovery treatment. In addition, we work closely with the Emergency departments and jail/criminal justice systems in Larimer and Weld counties. Our team provides comprehensive care coordination to assist with all aspects and barriers to recovery. We are also starting CRAFT training to support family members of those with OUD.
